Town of Ossining laboratory services grant: Water Quality Study exploring the potential for permitted public swimming at the Louis Engel, Jr. Hudson River Park Beach in Ossining, NY. 2021

Project summary:

• In 2021, the Town of Ossining provided funding for fecal bacterial studies to be carried out at the Ossining Hudson River beach.

• Over the course of two months, enterococcus samples were submitted to the Westchester County ELAP certified laboratories.

• Samples were taken at the Ossining beach itself.

• Samples also taken from the Sing Sing Kill, which empties a ¼ mile north of the beach.

• Samples were also taken from the final effluent of the County waste water treatment plant, 1,500 yards down stream of the beach.

• RESULTS:

•The water quality is ALMOST good enough to pass County standards for swimming

• But not quite. (July by itself would pass, August would not, together would not).

• Detailed analysis strongly implicates the Sing Sing Kill as primary source of sewage.

• The county waste water treatment plant is usually functioning within specifications. (But not always, especially during heavy rain events).
