Town of Ossining laboratory services grant PHASE II: Microbial Source Tracking in the Sing Sing Kill tributary in service of the Louis Engel, Jr. Hudson River Park beach. 2021

Project summary:

• In 2021, the Town of Ossining provided funding for fecal bacterial studies to be carried out for the Ossining Hudson River beach swimming initiative.

• That study pointed to the Sing Sing Kill as the likely primary source of bacteria at the beach.

• This phase Il study focused its sampling on the SSK upstream of the newly replaced sewer main (along the greenway) up to the first major branch of the SSK near the end of Dale Ave.

• Several storm water culverts were found to be contributing water of very high bacterial counts.

• Additionally, four locations along the Village of Ossining owned sewer main were leaking raw sewage.

• Those leaks demonstrate that the line is fractured in multiple locations.

Since the line is buried under the streambed along much of the length studied, it is unable to be easily inspected for cracks and breaks.

• An I&l study should be carried out ASAP. (This uses cameras in the pipe and dyes)
