Town of Ossining’s Louis Engel Waterfront Park beach: Water Quality (2025-2026)

Water quality monitoring at the Hudson River beach in Ossining and Microbial Source Tracking (MST) to locate sewage sources to facilitate mitigation planning.

NYSDEC Contract # DEC01-C03200GM-3350000

Partial matching grant provided by the Town of Ossining as lab services grant.

Water quality sampling was conducted in 2025 and will continue in 2026. The goal is to find, and get fixed, sewage sources that contribute to the water quality problems at the Ossining beach. These include the Sing Sing Kill and the Sparta Brook. Data suggests that the Westchester County Waste Water Treatment facility is NOT a significant source except on very rare occasions. (see earlier studies, Town of Ossining grants Phase I and II). Initial analysis suggests that despite the Village of Ossining’s laudable efforts to date to stem the flow of sewage into the Sing Sing Kill from the broken pipe sources that HVSC identified in 2022-2023, water quality improvement is not yet measurable. We are nevertheless excited because the Village obtained a NYSEFC planning grant to develop a plan for fixing these sewage inputs!

HVSC intern, Sinduja Narayanan, did a brilliant job studying the sewage sources on the Sparta Brook, and her report can be found here: For anyone interested in some semi-raw results from the 2024 and 2025 sampling season, plus some preliminary summary graphs, plus some photos click here.
